Mod Loading errors

I've been playing on 1.12.2 with mods. Everything was fine but I decided to add another mod. Now when I try to open the game it says that I have to download minecraft forge 14.23.4.2718 or higher for it to work. I downloaded the newest version for 1.12.2 but it's a jar file, that I can't run on my mac. So basically I'm just not really sure where to go from here . I've tried to look online on different forums but haven't had any luck.
