Can you only play on Forge Modded Servers if you are on the same network as the server host?

I want to create a Forge Modded Server to play with my friend online during these odd times that we can't be together, playing in the same room. (If we could, I would just do the following over LAN, and not even need to create a server).

Do you have to be on the same network in order to play together on a Forge Modded Server?

No, however whoever is running the server will need to allow and forward the port the server using through their router in order to make it visible to the outside world, and the remote player would need to know the public IP address (not the 192.168.x.x IP of the internal computer) of the host in order to connect.

  • 3 weeks later...

When all of this comes this crazy times come to an end, is there any advantage to using a server over playing with lan if we are only playing in the same room. (I know you can't play on the world unless the host of the lan makes it public and you would have to be in the same room. My friend only plays MC at my house since he doesn't have anything to play it on and I supply him with an extra laptop I have laying around)

    • I am unable to resolve my current issue, I have successfully downloaded the forge extension. I downloaded the correct Java link with Javafix included. I log into the game and it shows the "forge" launcher active menu. I double checked to make sure it was the right release number of minecraft and it matched the forge download as well, this also including the most recent forge client. The issue is when I go into a new minecraft server it doesn't allow me to do //wand. No matter what I try the same issue is following me, it almost seems as if the client is fully active but something isn't allowing it to run on my computer. I would appreciate some assistance regarding my problem.   Thank you
    • Came here for the same reason. But for me it's the client. After following your instructions with the jar, I ended up with the following error. I assume to have chosen the right jar   -jar "${lminecraft_library_path}/net/minecraftforge/forge/1.20.4-49.0.3/forge-1.20.4-49.0.3-shim.jar"   Minecraft 1.20.4 Forge: 1.20.4 - 49.0.3   ;--- cut here
