I don't know what this is but can someone clarify why the location of the server jar is inside the libraries directory and not outside like it was before? Has something changed and is it possible to revert back to how it was without breaking anything?

Because of the way Java's module system works you need to start the server with the provided bat(Windows) or sh(Mac/Linux) file.

This is my Forum Signature, I am currently attempting to transform it into a small guide for fixing easier issues using spoiler blocks to keep things tidy.

As the most common issue I feel I should put this outside the main bulk:

The only official source for Forge is https://files.minecraftforge.net, and the only site I trust for getting mods is CurseForge.

If you use any site other than these, please take a look at the StopModReposts project and install their browser extension, I would also advise running a virus scan.

For players asking for assistance with Forge please expand the spoiler below and read the appropriate section(s) in its/their entirety.

It moved to the libraries folder because we got sick of people being dumb running the vanilla jar instead of Forge's thus causing their world to loose mod data and the like.
We've wanted to do this for years, but kept getting push back from server hosts who were too lazy to change how they delt with their server layouts.
Now that we are forced to change how the server launches due to Java's Modular system, we decided to do it.
Why would you want it moved back? It should not effect you in any way where it is located.

I do Forge for free, however the servers to run it arn't free, so anything is appreciated.

Yes, but server hosts that have it the old way and now have to support both ways if users want older versions. It just make it harder and longer to work with. Take for example ptero eggs that support the old way for now if they want to support both ways then the installation would have to check the version for that specific version so it can use the new way to run the version. You can make two eggs but that just is a bit bad. Some hosts don't use eggs and rely on scripts that look for jars instead to work.

They have to support multiple ways of installing things as is. Cuz ya know, the 7 year jump in technology that happened in when they bumped from java 8 to java 16.
Things had to change due to factors outside our control, so sucks to be a server provider but you're gunna have to actually do some work instead of just raking in the cash for doing nothing.
It's not like it's even a hard change, we've done everything for them. They literally just have to run a shell script.

Again, why do you care? Are you a server provider? If so stop being lazy. If not, then it doesn't matter to you.

Also you guys have said you wanted to do this years before but hosts were too lazy or something. So how long ago in forge versions was it that you wanted to do this?

Also if you don't like answering don't answer.

Keep avoiding answering my question by asking other unrelated questions.
But i'll humor you. It's been something we've been thinking of doing ever since the first person ran the wrong jar. So probably about the 1.3 days.
So, now answer my question.
