Trying to make Custom items

Helloooo, I wanted to start making a custom item but I didnt know how to start. My question is, How do I learn using classes and methods that I override? for example the move() method, I want to make an item that moves the player in the direction he's looking with a given speed when the player use it.

This is basic java, if you don't know basic java i would highly recommend you to learn it first before modding minecraft.
