Is it possible to have a different set of mods in the same .minecraft folder?

I have some mods I am going to start installing and I notice that my /mods folder is inside of .minecraft and not inside of my /forge directory.  That seems to indicate that those mods would be global to all the different versions I have installed.

Is this a limitation on the current minecraft scheme or is there a way I can work around it?  Right now I can simply rename my .minecraft to a different name and rename the one I want to play back to .minecraft but that seems like an unwieldy kludge.

In the launcher the profiles have a game directory option for a reason use it.

Putting the mods folder in the versions folder is a bad idea because 1) what if you want to update forge? You'd have to shuffle files around. And 2) that only allows 1 set of mods per forge version. So ya, use the game dir option.

I do Forge for free, however the servers to run it arn't free, so anything is appreciated.
