How do you retrieve what item is in the given slot of a custom gui?  Im trying to get whats in slot 0 and 1 of my custom cannon block, and the this.te.getStackInSlot(0).getItem() always returns null.  I made sure I did

private ItemStack[] cannonItemStacks = new ItemStack[2];[/code} in my Tile Entity.  Is there a different method that should be used?

ItemStack#getItem()

You don't.  It is indicating that that method is accessible with an instance of item stack.

ItemStack.someMethod() //static method

ItemStack#someOtherMethod() //non-static method

Slot which don't contain an item typically return null.

Your method for retrieving is good, but your method for putting the item in the slot isn't...if you didn't forget to code one, that is. :)
