The problem with tutorials and documentation, is that the minecraft code changes constantly, so documentation, outside of the very basics, becomes outdated. Using your example of a list of forge's events, you would use your IDE to browse the minecraftforge classes, specifically net.minecraftforge.event where you will find event classes, as well as other packages further refining the events available, such as events for entities, enchanting, brewing, etc. A lot of things can be accomplished by "seeing how vanilla does it" as well. And of course, when new versions come out, there's a chances anything and everything will break, and have to be recoded with whatever new way things are being done.
