They use color multiplier and a second texture to overlay, like the leather knees just keep the same leather color.

I believe leather armor isnt a texture overlay, its rendered with a color multiplier.

Leather armor renders two textures.  The first one is the colored part, the second one is an overlay to put back the "still supposed to be brown" parts.

You can do it with any armor texture you'd like, if you set up your armor class the right way.

Now then, what texture object are you trying to mess with, all of them are handled differently.

Thanks for the reply draco.

well I'm just trying to use an overlay in my default item that just extends Item.

public void registerIcons(IconRegister par1IconRegister) {

//some code with the normal texture

//the overlay

itemIcon = par1IconRegister.registerIcon(Icons.getIcon("dagger_overlay"));

}

Look at getIcon() and requiresMultipleRenderPasses().

I'm pulling data from an NBT to determine which icon, but the basic method is there.

@SideOnly(Side.CLIENT)

@Override

public void registerIcons(IconRegister par1IconRegister) {

itemIcon = par1IconRegister.registerIcon(Icons.getIcon("dagger"));

overlayIcon = par1IconRegister.registerIcon(Icons.getIcon("dagger_overlay"));

}

    @Override

    public boolean requiresMultipleRenderPasses() {

            return true;

    }

public Icon getIcon(ItemStack stack, int renderPass){

if(renderPass == 0){

return itemIcon;

}else{

return overlayIcon;

}

}

private int colorA = 421010;

    @SideOnly(Side.CLIENT)

public int getColorFromItemStack(ItemStack par1ItemStack, int renderPass)

{

    if (renderPass == 0){

    return colorA;

    }

return 16777215;
