I get this in my log when trying to launch the game

I removed Editable Signs and got this in my log instead:

I do Forge for free, however the servers to run it arn't free, so anything is appreciated.

  Java Version: 1.6.0_65, Apple Inc.

You're using java 6 and *something* is needing java 7 {modders fix your crap}

Or you can track down which mod is causing the issue and tell it to DIAF.

My opinion.

I agree with your opinion, in general people should update. However, Mojang mandates compatibility with 1.6 for Minecraft. Modders should respect that mandate.
