I have the latest version of minecraft and forge. Whenever I open the installer and I'm given the option to install client it shows a message saying "There is no Minecraft directory set up. Either choose an alternative, or run the Minecraft launcher to create one. The .minecraft folder doesnt show up on this forge installer, but when I go in the roaming folder normally it is there. I've tried creating profiles on different minecraft updates and the equivalent forge, but it always shows the same message.

The installer shows the exact path to where it is trying to install.

It even has a 'browse' button you can use to select whatever folder you want.

That folder must have the launcher_profiles.json file.

What launcher are you using?

I do Forge for free, however the servers to run it arn't free, so anything is appreciated.

It shows the exact path but it ends at Roaming when I'm trying to install. When I go to browse it doesn't list .minecraft as an option. When I go to it normally not through forge I can find it and it has the launcher_profiles.json file and its in the roaming file. And I'm not quite sure what you mean by launcher, but I use the normal minecraft launcher, and whatever launcher forge came with if thats a thing.

You need to make sure that the .minecraft is part of the path that the installer sees. It should be there by default however you can use the browse button to specify it.

If your browse list doesnt show the .minecraft just type it in manually as your system may be hiding the folder.

Either way if you point the installer at the correct folder it will not have this issue.

The browse list doesn't show .minecraft and when I manually typed in .minecraft before it didn't recognize an install folder. Also maybe not important but now I can't type the letter c in the installer, but I can everywhere else on my computer. I tried moving the .minecraft folder to a different place and trying there but it didn't show up again.

i know this was posted 5 years ago, but basically what I found out is that you need to have the JAVA edition of minecraft. if you bought your minecraft off the window's 10 store, or more recently, redeemed it for free, it's the BEDROCK edition, and still doesn't support mods. I assume when you open the game, there's no launcher page and there's no text under "Minecraft" when the title screen is on, this tells you it's bedrock version, which is newer but.... no mods, no forge, etc.

Please don't necro ancient threads.

This is my Forum Signature, I am currently attempting to transform it into a small guide for fixing easier issues using spoiler blocks to keep things tidy.

As the most common issue I feel I should put this outside the main bulk:

The only official source for Forge is https://files.minecraftforge.net, and the only site I trust for getting mods is CurseForge.

If you use any site other than these, please take a look at the StopModReposts project and install their browser extension, I would also advise running a virus scan.

For players asking for assistance with Forge please expand the spoiler below and read the appropriate section(s) in its/their entirety.
