So block/item meta is 4 bit so you can only 0-15 for meta data, but then I seen items added by other with meta values way into the hundreds, so this can not be meta data can it? Or are they using there own system for meta data or is something else.

I would like to make item with more than 16 sub items is there, how would i go about this

Block metadata is limited to the range

[0, 15]

(4 bits), but item metadata is limited to

[0, Short.MAX_VALUE]

(16 bits).

Please don't PM me to ask for help. Asking your question in a public thread preserves it for people who are having the same problem in the future.

Ore-type-by meta isn't really worth doing unless you have a good reason. If your set on it, try and group things intelligently (eg by harvest level) just to make the coding easy (rather than having to do lookups by meta).

Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable.  If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME.  Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.

Exception: If you do not understand Java, I WILL NOT HELP YOU and your thread will get locked.

DO NOT PM ME WITH PROBLEMS. No help will be given.

And if you wanted all of your ore types to share some characteristics/behavior, then you could first create an abstract class implementing what's shared. Then each set of up to 16 ores could extend that class.

How many ores does a game need anyway? Well, I suppose if you're using Minecraft to teach the periodic table to students... Otherwise game playability should be a consideration.
