Hi! I am working on a mod and I want my entity to take an item out of my inventory when I get too close too it I tried this

		EntityPlayer play = this.worldObj.getClosestPlayerToEntity(this, 4.0F);
	ItemStack stack = play.inventory.getCurrentItem();

	if(stack != null && stack.getItem() == Items.acacia_door){
		--stack.stackSize;
	}

But it just crashes when I spawn the entity can anyone help

I spawned the entity within 4 blocks of me (what I set the distance to) and it still crashed.

Post the crash.

It is telling me I have a problem with this line ItemStack stack = play.inventory.getCurrentItem();

  • Author

What kind of problem?

It is telling me that that is what caused the error. I shoul've mentioned this but I have the original code in my onLivingUpdate in my entity's class

  • Author

Which problem? You have not mentioned any kind of problem except "it crashed".

"Doctor, it hurts." - "Where?" - "DOCTOR, IT HURTS!"

As soon as I spawn the entity in the world it crashes, and if I already have the entity in the world it crashes before I can even see the world.

Post the crash.

My f***ing god.

You just assume that

getClosestPlayerToEntity

will always return a player. But what if there is nobody nearby? Then it will return

null

. And you can't access fields or call methods on

null

.

Seriously, if you just completely disregard anything we say, then yes, your problems will not magically disappear in a puff of smoke.

Does that mean it is not possible to do what I want to do?

What happens when the player doesn't hold any item in his selected slot in the hotbar ?

Squirrel ! Squirrel ! Squirrel !

Then

getCurrentItem

will return null (or

ItemStack.EMPTY

in non-outdated Minecraft versions).

(I know, I just want to let him figure it out by himself what are the cases and the results)
