Actually you're right there is really no reason to keep the index.html up. Could just make a header redirect to the normal download page.

All the files are mavenized so that has no more data then the normal download page... 

Edit: Uploaded a redirect.

I do Forge for free, however the servers to run it arn't free, so anything is appreciated.

gives me files.minecraftforge.net as the first link, without any reference to the old page. . .

 

*edit: just looked at your screenshot. Why would you click a sublink? The very first link is the index page. . .

It's labeled "Minecraft Forge Downloads" so someone could think that the main link was an about page and that the listed sub-page was the specific download page. Many sites have the index page and download page as separate pages.
