Hello :)

Im making a mod which adds decorated blocks and im wondering how i set 1 id for a range of the same block. Like on BOP they have there planks "1947" for the first block then after the others are "1947:{number}" how do I set this sub id (I think thats what its called) I have my config files set up and have a default id for the first one but need some help on how to add the code to add the ":" then the id so I don't take up a load of ID for no reason.

Any help would be appreciated also if you need some more information please ask for it :)

Thanks

Hey there,

what you're asking for is already in miencraft and it's called "metadata", kinda like how trees have different wood but they all have id 17 (same goes for wool, they all have the same id but their color is based on their metadata)  just remember that metadata is only 16 possible number (0-15) so if you have more then 15 blocks, you WILL need to use more then 1 ID. btw, dont be afraid to use multiple id. if you have config files peopel can always change it in case there is a conflict.

Okay now I know what im looking for, so how would one implement "metadata" for a block. I see on the tutorials but as im using a config file to pull the IDs im not sure where and who to add the code :/

Posted

well metadata is already implemented in-game, like i said, wool wood, stair, plants (flower?) already have it.

basicly metadata is an extra information about the block, can be its color (wool) its direction (chest/furnace) can be its type ( wood )

what youll want to do is look around the method world.setBlockWithMetadata, Block.getSubBlocks  etc, if you just go in the Block and World class ctrl+f for "meta" you should find what you're looking for

also, if you're using ecilpse, use rightclick+open call hierarchi. this help a TON

but honestly dont be afraid to use multiple completely different block, use "subblocks" or metadata only if like you're making a blue firepit and red firepit, these would be pretty much the same. If you're doing like a statue and a teapot, use different ID please.

Yeah but it's not because it's possible to do it that you should do it

like implementing TileEntitySpecialRenderer and a TileEntity for a block that can easily be rendered by ISimpleblockRenderHandle (or wtv its called)

good practice makes good code :)

Could you explain what you have done so far, what you dont understand, what you DO understand and what you're trying to accomplish.

saying "i dont get it" doesnt help us understand whats going on

Okay,  here is a link to the source of the mod: https://github.com/DiamentiumUK/BlocksNMore/tree/Dev

What im trying to do is have my first block "CheckeredPlanks" and have 4 versions of that block but with different textures. But to have all the same properties as the each other. I am going to make a few blocks which have variant versions but hence wanting to learn how to use "metadata" to save on ids

Does that explain enough?

I have looked around on the net and got MetaData working but there is an issue when I place the blocks in game there not getting the right texture only the default "Meta" blocks one, you can see them in the GUI. Also when breaking the blocks the default block is the one which is being dropped. :/ Have I got a buggy code or done something wrong?

You don't have an onBlockPlaced or onBlockAddedToWorld function to set the block's metadata.

I never saw that function on the tutorials I watched :/ Is there an example showing those functions? The wiki one does not show that function either.

One of the two of them (onAddedToWorld, I think) returns an int.  This returned int is the block's metadata.

You should really look at blocks in vanilla that already use the desired behavior.

You need registerIcons(), getIcon(side, meta), damageDropped(meta), and getSubBlocks(id, tabs, list). Here's a class I use for sub-blocks.

package sbfp;

import java.util.List;

import net.minecraft.block.material.Material;
import net.minecraft.client.renderer.texture.IconRegister;
import net.minecraft.creativetab.CreativeTabs;
import net.minecraft.item.ItemStack;
import net.minecraft.util.Icon;
import cpw.mods.fml.relauncher.Side;
import cpw.mods.fml.relauncher.SideOnly;

public abstract class BlockSub extends BlockSB{

public Icon[] icons;
public final String[] names;

public BlockSub(int id, Material material, String[] names){
	super(id,material,names[0]);
	this.names = names;
}

@Override
@SideOnly(Side.CLIENT)
public void registerIcons(IconRegister register){
	icons = new Icon[names.length];
	for(int i = 0; i<names.length; i++){
		icons[i] = register.registerIcon("sbfp:"+this.names[i]);
	}
}

@Override
@SideOnly(Side.CLIENT)
public Icon getIcon(int side, int meta){
	return icons[meta];
}

@Override
public int damageDropped(int meta){
	return meta;
}

@Override
public void getSubBlocks(int id, CreativeTabs tabs, List list){
	for(int i = 0; i<names.length; ++i){
		list.add(new ItemStack(id,1,i));
	}
}
}

Um... why aren't you in 1.5.2? The texture system changed in 1.5.2.

50% laziness 50% i didn't expect it to be that many changes my mod also does some small dirty vanilla modification ..... *shame on me*  so i tend not to switch version too often. plus i heard that the texture thigny was changed in 1.5+ so i though i was good for a while.

thanks  ^^

Oh, and you will also need an ItemBlock class like so:

package sbfp.world;

import net.minecraft.item.ItemBlock;
import net.minecraft.item.ItemStack;
import sbfp.modsbfp;

public class ItemBlockOre extends ItemBlock{

public ItemBlockOre(int id){
	super(id);
	this.setHasSubtypes(true);
}

@Override
public int getMetadata(int damage){
	return damage;
}

@Override
public String getUnlocalizedName(ItemStack is){
	return modsbfp.blockOre.names[is.getItemDamage()];
}
}
