Hello all....need some help...

Searched the forums before posting (I swear) but can't understand exactly what I need to do to get past my problem after trying to install Forge:

I keep getting the message: "you need to run the version 1.8 manually" when trying to install Forge 1.8.

I see posts about that I need to run a "Vanilla Launcher 1.8" first to get it to work....what's a Vanilla launcher? I searched Google and had no luck.

My son is really interested in getting started with modding and I'd love to help him out. Anyone that has a few minutes, could you explain what I need to do to get Forge 1.8 to install? Relatively new here, so please be kind.....and detailed.

The answer is straight forward, use the mojang launcher, and load 1.8 minecraft.

It's right there in the error message.

What happens if the "straight forward" answer doesn't work and it still comes up with the same error. I have tried 2 different versions with the same problem.

I ran the unmodded 1.8 but still got the run 1.8 manually error. I even tried the 1.7.10 and it does the same error.

Yes, when I check the version in the edit profile it showed version 1.8.0_25 exe.

C:\Program Files\Minecraft\runtime\jre-x32\1.8.0_25\bin\javaw.exe

Unfortunately that didn't work. I even tried uninstalling Minecraft and re-installing it to no avail. Same message, my next thing will to uninstall and scrub any registry info on Minecraft and try again unless someone has a better idea.

Which version of the Minecraft Launcher are you using? If it's 1.6.X then downgrading to 1.5.3 may helps .

Ok, so I am having the same problem, I go to update to the new forge for 1.8, now I have two minecraft folders

C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft this is where my games and mods and all that are

C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft - kids this one is where my kids saves are, that way when they want to play one of their worlds they can't get to mine, they have their own profiles, that and it saves from having to scroll through a LOT of worlds to find the one that is wanted. I updated my forge with no problems at all but when I try to update my kids forge I keep getting the error to run normal minecraft 1.8, I have checked more then once to make sure that I have, I have even gone so far as to move all the mods out of the mods folder, created a new profile and still the same problem. I do not understand why it works find for mine but not theirs. I was even going to take the suggestion of Peacestorm to downgrade my launcher to 1.5.3, right now its 1.6.11 but not sure how to do this, looked up on Google but all of what I found are from old launchers and want the bin folder, which does not exist for me, and the rest are how to use a different version of the game. I would be very grateful for some help getting forge to work for my kids for 1.8, and they would as well. Thanks

So I got forge to update but now the game won't start, when I click play a new tab 'game output' opens in my launcher, I will post the info it shows, looks like it has to do with java, but I am not sure.

I got it to update by copying the 1.8 folder that is here C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\versions to my kids minecraft directory. Attacking the game output info.
