So, i recently got the most recent update of Railcraft, and it told me i needed Forge 2779 or up to run the mod. I decided to get the latest update of 1.12 Forge.

But, i went to the website, and i saw the latest, and it said 2814, but i went to check, and it was actually 2815. Also, i noticed a Virus symbol by the 2814 in the 'view all versions'

And then, i installed 2814, oblivious to the fact that there was a virus symbol, and, whaddya know? I got a trojan.

Now thankfully, I've got Avira and it caught the trojan and exterminated it from my PC. Then, i installed 2815, and it kept crashing each time i tried to run it.

Help?

Apart from everything else though... well... you know... normally when a hacker upload a malicious software, he is not going to put a "virus" symbol that tells everyone "HEY THIS IS A MALICIOUS SOFTWARE" next to it. ?

The "symbol you're referring to is a "bug" it's used to mark builds that are not the main branch for their version. Stars are rec builds, half stars are latest builds.

No idea where you got said "virus". If you're downloading through ad links be sure you're not downloading the advertized software if you don't want it.

I do Forge for free, however the servers to run it arn't free, so anything is appreciated.

I do seem to remember that being the case at some point, but at present, the 'bug' icon is being used there as well. Perhaps it was unintentionally changed at some point?

Hmm 2815 works quite fine, although I'm on 1.13.2 now... No clue if it's my country or my browser but the ads are not working properly...don't see them...(I don't have any ad blocker) so weird situation?! Forge is OpenSource what's the point on putting a virus that everyone would see on github ? probably ads going wacko

Crashing each time you run it?! Okey...there's a crash log at least?

I know it's OK maybe there is a conflicting mod...or who knows...

I do remember that on my PC I have to use java instead of javaw or I get weird crashes...but that may only be just me...

If you're crashing, please provide a debug log.

JModder, it makes no sense that you would be unable to use javaw, but if you don't have internet on your PC you can't easily share a log, can you?

Edit: Separate issue, I've split the messages about this into their own thread.

This is my Forum Signature, I am currently attempting to transform it into a small guide for fixing easier issues using spoiler blocks to keep things tidy.

As the most common issue I feel I should put this outside the main bulk:

The only official source for Forge is https://files.minecraftforge.net, and the only site I trust for getting mods is CurseForge.

If you use any site other than these, please take a look at the StopModReposts project and install their browser extension, I would also advise running a virus scan.

For players asking for assistance with Forge please expand the spoiler below and read the appropriate section(s) in its/their entirety.

Conflicting mod yes. Started up fine, but then

Can you send a screenshot of the file that you downloaded as "version 2814"?

Did you click skip and then click the ad?

Or did you click skip and get spooked by Windows telling you that the Forge installer could be malicious?
