Posted June 29, 201312 yr How do I install forge when using the Minecraft Launcher? I can sucessfully update the 1.5.2 jar file, but the launcher just redownloads vanilla and overwrites it, yet I'm told from MC1.6 onwards we will *have* to use Mojangs Minecraft Launcher.

The Forge devs work already on porting Forge to 1.6 (and recoding it because of that) to be compatible with the new Launcher. Fun fact: the new Launcher uses some FML technology. If you wanna use Forge on versions pre-1.6, use the old launcher, or an other 3rd-party launcher. (I recommend MultiMC) Don't ask for support per PM! This is not how learning works.
June 29, 201312 yr Create a new 'version' Anything that is in a official Mojang 'version' will have it's contents overwritten if modified. So go into %appdata%/.minecraft/versions Copy '1.5.2' name it 'Forge1.5.2' rename '1.5.2.jar' to 'Forge.1.5.2.jar' And then toss forge into it. It *should* work. Though I havent tested it. I do Forge for free, however the servers to run it arn't free, so anything is appreciated. Consider supporting the team on Patreon
June 29, 201312 yr To use the new launcher with modded 1.5.2, do the following: 1) copy and paste the 1.5.2 folder to the desktop 2) rename the folder to 1.5.2 Mod 3) Rename the the two files in the folder to 1.5.2 Mod 4) open the json file with a text editor, like notepad, and change the id from "1.5.2" to "1.5.2 Mod". 5) Install forge to the 1.5.2 Mod jar. 6) put the 1.5.2 Mod folder in to the versions folder 7) create a new profile and for the version, select "release 1.5.2 Mod" 8 ) proceed as you normally would from then on. Edit: and LexManos beat me to it, although I'm pretty sure the json file also needs to be changed. That's what I did to make it work.
July 1, 201312 yr Yes, the json file does need to be edited. So without confusion, the 3 things that need to be edited are 1) The folder name 2) The jar file 3) The name inside the json file (All the names *must* be the same)

I second SanAndreasP. If you want to run a version 1.5.2 or earlier, get MultiMC. I've been using it for a few months now and I love it to pieces. It is easy to use, you can specify directories for the MultiMC instances, there does not seem to be any shared folders between MultiMC instances, and it's a tiny little uncomplicated program. I intend to keep using it, period. In regards to *having* to use Mojang's launcher, I assume that is meant in terms of using the new launcher for releases 1.6 and onwards, and is not going to be applied to older versions. (I don't know for certain, though, that's just my speculation.)
