[SOLVED] 1.16.5 Schedule Block Update

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I want to know how i can schedule changes to a blockstate after a certain amount of time. I want to change the blocks state of my block on right click after some seconds to render an animation during this time. How would i approach this?

any reason why using Java threads wouldn't work?

you could do:

new Thread(() -> {
  Thread.sleep(/* how long to wait in miliseconds */)
  /* do your logic here */
}).start();

So i solved this by using blockstates for the intermediate state where the block would not update and schedule a tick after the given amount of time. Then in the tick() method of the block i do my logic when the blockstate matches my intermediate state.

"Freeze entire game while we wait for this block to update."
Yes, that's exactly what we want.

Doesn't the thread run asynchronously? If not, my bad then, I apologize for the bad advice

The main server thread? Hell no. You sleep the main server thread, then water stops flowing, redstone stops updating, mobs stop moving, and players get disconnected due to a timeout.

Thread.Sleep() is almost never the solution to "I need to wait for something." Never never never never.

Draco isn't correct here since you are spawning a new thread. However it is still terrible advice.

  • Spawning a new thread just to sleep is an absolute waste of system resources. Threads are huge beasts.
  • You cannot interact with the game from a separate thread as most of Minecraft's code is not threadsafe.

This is the correct solution.

Ah yes, it is a newly spawned thread. I just saw the Thread.sleep part of things, because that's so commonly suggested and/or tried and "didn't work."
