Hi,

I use the JSON API for automatic updates, but I can't reach it anymore. I get a "404 Not Found" error.

http://files.minecraftforge.net/maven/net/minecraftforge/forge/json

I hope someone can help me and knows more about it.

That file was intentionally removed.

Please don't auto-DL forge, that denies ad revenue that keeps the servers up.

If you want to see the ads go away, that is the goal of Lex's Patreon.

This is my Forum Signature, I am currently attempting to transform it into a small guide for fixing easier issues using spoiler blocks to keep things tidy.

As the most common issue I feel I should put this outside the main bulk:

The only official source for Forge is https://files.minecraftforge.net, and the only site I trust for getting mods is CurseForge.

If you use any site other than these, please take a look at the StopModReposts project and install their browser extension, I would also advise running a virus scan.

For players asking for assistance with Forge please expand the spoiler below and read the appropriate section(s) in its/their entirety.

So that means these api no longer exist? Not even to be informed only about new updates?

Many systems exist, the fat json file has long been the wrong way to get this information.

You should make your usecase better known. If it's actually good then we can advise you how to do it now.

But yes, Don't auto-download Forge. Don't use the giant json file.

I do Forge for free, however the servers to run it arn't free, so anything is appreciated.

Here's an idea. How about someone on the Forge team develops a way so only Patron donors can access a .json for whatever they need? Maybe make the "index_mc.json" require a --ForgeUsername and --ForgePassword, assuming the patrons let you know.

Using Forge forums credentials because that be what you have rights to know.

And for when a name leaves the Patron list, have a thing that auto removes the corresponding ForgeUsername from the "allowed access" list.

It not like people would share their passwords anyway.

Except, they would. And it's a bit more of a overhead then we would want to put on to the server. As it's designed to be a very light weight server that does nothing but serve raw files.

There is metadata available. If you're spend a bit of time to actually do you research you can figure out how to do it correctly.

But most people don't. And we're not going to sit here and support the people who don't support us.

I'm from a gameserver host and we have a system that automatically detects and downloads updates from Minecraft (Vanilla, Snapshot), Forge and various modpacks.
This allows us to guarantee that our customers always have the latest versions and bug fixes.

If there is another way to detect updates from Forge, I would be very happy about that, but I don't think it's in your interest?.

i mean, are you passing on some profits to Forge in compensation for keeping you in business?

No, not yet, but that's something to talk about, but no one from Forge answers me

Forge has a discord, an IRC and these forums. Lex also has a Patreon that you can donate to or a bitcoin address if that’s your thing.
