I've decided to start my journey into modding minecraft and I am wondering if there is any general tips that I should know as someone new to modding.

I'm using eclipse for modding, photoshop/paint.net for texturing. Are there any better tools I could use instead of those?

For start I set myself a goal I want to venture to and that is to create a pollution mod;

Stage 1:

- Pollution will be emitted from furnaces, the level at which it becomes full is dependent on 1) if the furnace is in airtight space 2) volume of the space it is in 3) if there are any other furnaces working alongside.

- Polluted air has clear visual and physical effects, the effects go as follows from severity: 1). fog 2) reduced health regeneration 3) being in the area poisons you and slows you down

Stage 2:

- A re-breather which has to have its filters changed every now and then, stops all effects a fog has on the player.

- A monitoring tool to help determine the pollution and air quality levels around the player, there will also be a block form which will emit redstone signal and have a small interface

Stage 3:

- Contaminated blocks and vegetation, as air pollution spreads and sits for too long the grass will become contaminated, all crops will go bad and they become unusable.

- Air around the polluted areas and blocks around can catch fire more easily.

How difficult would something like this be to create? Also, is there a community discord server I can join?

Thank you!

Your idea is too big. For example, what is a "airtight space"? Think about how you'd define this whole having a render distance of 1 block (ie suffering the blindness effect). Do doors let air pass through them? Iron bars? Fences?

You're new. You should start simple. Make a single block

Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable.  If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME.  Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.

Exception: If you do not understand Java, I WILL NOT HELP YOU and your thread will get locked.

DO NOT PM ME WITH PROBLEMS. No help will be given.

For now, I'm going to learn how to make simple things like any new person would. I don't expect to know how to do this in a couple of weeks, but it sure helps me set a destination to build my path towards. Creating basic blocks and learning my way around, either way thank you for the welcome :)

Avoid tutorials on YouTube (personal opinion), as most youtube tutorials have terrible practices (fact).

I've personally went through the horrible experience of adapting to the conventions of youtube tutorials and had to gone back to rewrite thousands of lines of code.

1. Do not follow tutorials on YouTube, especially TechnoVision (previously called Loremaster) and HarryTalks, due to their promotion of bad practice and usage of outdated code.

2. Always post your code.

3. Never copy and paste code. You won't learn anything from doing that.

Hello and thank you for the links, I started off by browsing and watching whatever there was to teach me how to setup the workspace. I will definetly refrain from watching youtube videos in the future, thank you!

The vast majority of YT tutorials out there are written by people who are just as new to modding as you are. Would you trust their advice?

They're so excited that they got something to work, they just HAD to share.

Which is a great impulse, however the way they got stuff to work was convoluted, unstable and overly-complicated. This isn’t that much of an issue in itself, they can go back and fix their code. The issue is that this code is not suitable for tutorials.

@Solar_Wraith, I am also new so thank you for starting this thread! Really good advice here so thanks all.

If I may (let me know if I need to start a new thread) Could someone point me in the direction (link would be awesome) of how to create a new biome that should be included in the Overworld? I’ve been able to register the Bioime but I am unsure how to get it into the chunk loader (probably just a simple oversight on my part but there you have it). I wasn’t seeing anything in the above linked tutorials, which may again be due to oversight. Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.

Make your own forum thread, this has nothing to do with this thread. In future don't hijack other threads. Jabelar has some tutorials on stuff like this at http://jabelarminecraft.blogspot.com

Apologies for quoting you, however I wanted to know what is the major difference between intellij and eclipse? Right now I've got both but already got workspace setup for eclipse, is there a specific thing each program differentiates from another? Or are they both very similar in workflow and the changes are minor?

Thanks.

They're just different IDEs. Some folks like one, some folks like the other.

They are all IDEs; their aim is the same: make programming easier. There might be some difference in the features of the IDEs, but they are fundamentally the same.

Which IDE to use completely depends on your personal preference; it is almost like the question “Pepsi or Coke?”

Also, in the future, please create another thread for questions that are not relevant to the current thread.

P.S. Pepsi is terrible.

    • I'm no Java expert, but am trying to generate the dimension noise_settings for my mod using code, but am stuck on how to program 'string' arguments. I have used the Noise Settings Generator at https://misode.github.io/worldgen/noise-settings/?version=1.20 to design my noise settings In my code, my RegistrySetBuilder adds Registries.NOISE_SETTINGS, and in that bootstrap I register my noise which creates a new NoiseGeneratorSettings. This creates a new NoiseRouter, to which I pass DensityFunction parameters Noise Settings Generator Float Arguments I can code like: DensityFunctions.constant(1) Object Arguments I can code like: DensityFunctions.noise(holdergetter.getOrThrow(Noises.SURFACE), 500.0D, -12.0D) But I can't see how to do String Arguments. In misode they look like Argument: String: minecraft:overworld_large_biomes/sloped_cheese   Any ideas?
    • Hello everyone, Very junior mod maker here. I'm making a floating plank that sits over water. There's this heavy shadow on it when there's a block over it for some reason. As you can see in the picture, the lily pad that has a block over it is just a little darker from the shadow. however my custom plank is almost dark. I have no idea what might cause this. If it is how I generate the block model, here's the code I'm using:   getBuilder(block.getId().getPath()) .ao(false) .texture("particle", new ResourceLocation(xxxxx.MODID, "block/" + block.getId().getPath())) .texture("texture", new ResourceLocation(xxxxx.MODID, "block/" + block.getId().getPath())) .element() .from(0.01f, -2f, 0.01f) .to(15.99f, 0.01f, 15.99f) .face(Direction.DOWN).uvs(0f, 0f, 16f, 16f).texture("#texture").cullface(Direction.DOWN).tintindex(0).end() .face(Direction.UP).uvs(0f, 0f, 16f, 16f).texture("#texture").cullface(Direction.UP).tintindex(0).end() .face(Direction.NORTH).uvs(0f, 0f, 16f, 2.01f).texture("#texture").cullface(Direction.NORTH).tintindex(0).end() .face(Direction.SOUTH).uvs(0f, 0f, 16f, 2.01f).texture("#texture").cullface(Direction.SOUTH).tintindex(0).end() .face(Direction.EAST).uvs(0f, 0f, 2.01f, 16f).texture("#texture").rotation(ModelBuilder.FaceRotation.CLOCKWISE_90).cullface(Direction.EAST).tintindex(0).end() .face(Direction.WEST).uvs(0f, 0f, 2.01f, 16f).texture("#texture").rotation(ModelBuilder.FaceRotation.CLOCKWISE_90).cullface(Direction.WEST).tintindex(0).end() .end();
