    Was your launcher running when you ran the installer? If so, close it and run the installer again, then reopen the launcher.

    The two channels are snapshot and stable, you want a version that is listed here, here, or here. Note: The versions hosted on the Forge maven don't show the trailing MC version but it still exists in the backend if you check the direct link.

    Did you make a config handler or do you have any other mods in your workspace?

    The files should be usable just note that if your setup doesn't work or an update to the launcher has broken Forge's 1.8.9 files you won't receive assistance.
